Invited by John and Lisa to share my thoughts and experience of my visit here, I begin with gratitude for the invitation to visit this beautiful country of Honduras. But it isn't just the beauty, the country reaches into the soul and somehow brings you to the reality of life.
The mountains are like none I have ever seen. I am not a world traveler but I have enjoyed the sight of some grand and beautiful mountains. These are not only lush, green, and grand, but majestic and natural at the same time. You get the feeling that this places is right next door to heaven.
Even more amazing is the stark poverty of the people and their joy. I know joy and poverty don't seem to go together, but this country knows how to do that.
My mom said she was so grateful that the mission here is serving the people and that John and Lisa are a part of it. The strength of the native people to carry on through all the hardships they face is spirit lifting. They live with hardly anything and some with nothing at all except the clothes on their backs and a tin shack for a house. But they carry themselves with grace and an assurance that God is good. They know and accept that they need help and are very grateful for the mission work done here.
Yes, you could say that I am thankful for the opportunities we have in the good ole USA. But I am also grateful this country allows the missions to help their people - for we are all God's children. The next time we share our Thanksgiving together, be thankful for the missionaries that help build a better and healthier life for these people.
A grateful guest in Honduras,
Sally (and Mom)
