My favorite photo from market yesterday! |
While talking with some of our sons and my mother and sister this week, I felt so extremely fortunate to be able to connect electronically with our family - immediate, extended, and friends we consider family. With today's technology we have ability to text, message, facebook, blog, Skype and will eventually be able to phone as well - It's really quite a small world and we don't feel so isolated as travelers in years past must have felt.
I've been thinking a lot about the bible verse in Mark 3:33-35: "Who are my mother and my brothers?" he asked. Then he looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, "Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does God's will is my brother and sister and mother."
Adjusting to life in Guatemala has confirmed that while cultures and customs are different, people are just people -- same basic needs (true needs, not what we Americans often define as needs), same ability to smile and laugh and enjoy the beauty around us. Many Guatemalans are poor, but life is very rich here.
As we celebrated John's birthday this past week, he received messages, notes and calls from many of our family and friends -- THANKS! We also had cake at both our school and with our host family (both were a surprise to John and he was close to tears from happiness at the school). The genuine smiles, hugs and emotions reminded me that we widen our circle of "family" each and every day. And it motivates me to live Christ's example.
